Understanding Hair Loss From Steroids
What Causes Hair Loss?

As of February 2014, most hair loss experts and physicians believe that androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness is primarly caused by a genetic predisposition hormone DHT or dihydrotestosterone and perhaps some other less-significant hormonal factors.

In short, DHT attaches to hair follicles that are not genetically programmed to withstand certain levels of the hormone. This inflammatory process will cause the hair will shed and progressively thin over time if this process is allowed to continue.

Basically, DHT causes hair loss.

But only if you are genetically prone to hair loss.

How Do Steroids Cause Hair Loss?

If you are genetically prone to male pattern baldness, using steroids can accelerate your hair loss because you will have higher levels of DHT in your body. It is a misconception that “steroids cause hair loss,” steroids will only cause potential hair loss to follicles that are prone to male pattern baldness.

Certain steroids are notorious for promoting hair loss while other compounds are safer. If you are curious about a specific steroid and its potential effect on hair loss a complete list can be found here.

A more detailed discussion "Do Anabolic Steroids Cause Hair Loss?" can be found here.

How Do I Prevent or Control Steroid Related Hair Loss?

As of July 2011, in order to prevent or control your hair loss, you must lower the levels of DHT that are circulating in your body or block the DHT from attaching to hair follicles that are prone to male pattern baldness.

For steroid users, this can be tough because there will be superphysiological levels of DHT circulating throughout your body.

There are several medications and select products that can help.

Unfortunately, the majority of hair loss remedies available will not help prevent or control hair loss, especially if you have extremely high levels of testosterone and/or DHT in your body.

Any products or treatments listed on this website I personally use and believe they are very best for preventing and controlling hair loss from steroids. The recommendations can be found here.
